One of the key differences between stock and bone broth lies in their nutrient content. Here’s a little fact you might be interested in (it certainly shocked us!)... Most chicken stock cubes don’t actually contain any chicken. Rather, they recreate its flavour with fillers, sugar, glucose, colours and preservatives. While so much information out there will tell you broth is made only from meat, make sure you are reading the labels as broth and bone broth are quite different.
While some other stock is typically made by simmering bones with some vegetables and aromatics for a few hours, bone broth takes it a step further by simmering bones for an extended period, sometimes up to 24 hours or more. This prolonged cooking time allows the bones to release more nutrients like collagen, gelatin, amino acids, and minerals into the broth, making bone broth a nutritional powerhouse that can support joint health, gut health, and overall well-being.
Our bone broth range follows a traditional recipe to ensure a nutrient-rich product. High quality bones are added to filtered water and apple cider vinegar (a technique to exact the maximum amount of nutrients) and then slow cooked for hours. Following this, the broth is strained to eliminate any impurities and excess fat is removed from the surface. To tailor the taste to various preferences, we incorporate premium, vegetables, herbs, and spices into the broth. For our bone broth powders, we employ a gentle refractance drying method to transform them into a convenient powdered form, ensuring that the nutritional integrity remains intact throughout the process. Interested to taste test the difference yourself? Try our best selling bone broth powders: Chicken Bone Broth Homestyle Original, Beef Bone Broth Hearty Original or Vegetable Broth Garden Veggie.
Speaking of gut health, bone broth is often hailed as a gut-friendly elixir. The gelatin and collagen found in bone broth are thought to help soothe and heal the lining of the digestive tract, making it a soothing choice. Drinking a cup of bone broth in the morning before breakfast helps set your digestion up for the day.
If you suffer from joint pain or stiffness, bone broth might be just what the doctor ordered. The amino acids in collagen and gelatin (found in bone broth) are essential building blocks for healthy joints, cartilage, and connective tissue. Sipping on bone broth is an easy way to help support your health goals for bone and joint support.
With its rich nutrient profile, bone broth is like a warm hug for your immune system. The amino acids and minerals found in bone broth can help support a robust immune response, keeping you healthy and resilient, especially during cold and flu season. So, swap out that canned soup for a nourishing bowl of bone broth next time you feel a sniffle coming on. Taste the range with our Best Selling Broth Bundle or browse our broth range for the perfect flavour match for you.
Last but not least, bone broth is incredibly versatile in the kitchen. While stock (cubes & liquid) is mainly used as a one-note, salty addition to soup, bone broth can not only be enjoyed on its own as a comforting beverage, but also for cooking liquid for grains like rice or quinoa, or incorporated into recipes for added flavour and nutrition. From savoury soups to hearty stews to flavorful risottos, the possibilities are endless with bone broth. Don’t believe us? Check out our recipe page for our delicious collection of broth recipes. Making the switch from stock to bone broth is not just about upgrading your culinary creations; it's also about nourishing your body from the inside out. With its nutrient-rich goodness, gut-friendly properties, joint-supporting benefits, immune-boosting power, and versatility in the kitchen, bone broth is a delicious and nutritious addition to any diet. So, why not give it a try and see what all the buzz is about? Your taste buds and your body will thank you for it!

]]>Figuring out how to parent is hard enough, and then you have to worry about nutrition! As if being the CEO of your busy family isn’t enough?! It’s a common struggle though, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that only 8.5% of children are getting enough fruit and vegetables. Poor nutrition has an immediate impact on growth, development and health of children. Understanding the right nutrition for your child will help prevent health problems later in life. So let’s get into it.
Nourishing children needs to be considered from two different angles. Providing the nutrition that they need to grow and thrive now, whilst also nurturing happy long-term relationships with food (and we understand that sometimes those two things can be at odds with one another). So how can we easily bring nutrition into our kids' diets? We are here to help.
The best way to ensure you are giving your child a highly nutritious diet is to zoom out and think big picture. This means you don’t need to focus on a single meal or a specific food, but focus on the variety of foods you are regularly offering. Ensure your fridge and pantry are full of wholefoods from every food group. You know you have a healthy balanced diet if your weekly shop contains a full spectrum of colour and a variety of textures.
Protein- Proteins are the building blocks of body tissue, and can also be used as fuel for energy. A diet that doesn’t contain sufficient protein can slow growth and development. For an extra boost of protein try our Thriving Family range- a delicious plant-based protein & wholefood multivitamin blend with 17 vitamins and minerals to help every member of the family thrive.
Fibre - Fibre is vital for kids' nutrition as it aids digestion, prevents constipation, helps support a slower release of sugars in the body, supports a healthy gut and assists with nutrient absorption. You’ll find our Super Tummy kids product to be rich in fibre and contain powerful pre & probiotics for gut and digestive support.
Iron - Iron is incredibly vital but easy to become deficient in, especially for young children who may deplete their stored iron. Fussy eaters may reject iron-rich foods, and absorption can be challenging. Maintaining iron levels is essential for oxygen transport, growth, and cognitive function, as deficiency symptoms include weakness, fatigue, and loss of focus.
Calcium - Calcium is crucial in kids' nutrition for strong bones and teeth, essential for growth and development. It also supports other areas of wellbeing including mood, energy, nerve function and digestion. Adequate calcium intake during childhood lays the foundation for lifelong bone health. Try our Choc Whiz product for a boost of calcium in your everyday lifestyle.
B Vitamins - B vitamins are essential in kids' nutrition for energy production, brain function, metabolism, growth, and a healthy nervous system. B vitamin deficiency includes fatigue, confusion and depression.
To find out more about your little one's digestion, read our blog ‘Gut Health For Kids’.
A rainbow of fruits and vegetables - rainbows made of edible plants are nature's way of letting us know that we are getting a great variety of vitamins, minerals, beneficial phytochemicals and fibre. It’s super pretty too, and we eat with our eyes!
High quality proteins, including organ meats - High quality proteins including eggs, fish, meats, legumes and grains are essential to include in your kid’s diets. This will ensure they are getting plenty of all the essential amino acids for all that growing they need to do. Organ meats (particularly liver) are also great to include, as they are a highly concentrated reservoir of essential minerals. Keep in mind that you only need one small serve of organ meats a week - it’s easy to overdo organ meats because of their nutritional potency. In this situation, less is more.
Healthy fats - Including good sources of healthy fats like oily fish, avocado, fresh olive oil, nuts and seeds will help reduce inflammation in little growing bodies and support brain development.
Salt - Being mindful of your child’s overall salt intake is important for a few reasons. A diet too high in sodium can increase blood pressure, put more pressure in little kidneys and develop taste preferences for saltier, more processed foods. You don’t need to avoid sodium all together (sodium is still essential in the diet). Just make sure it’s consumed in moderation.
Highly processed foods - Ensure that highly processed foods only make up a very small portion of your child's diet. We get it, some processed foods are unavoidable and trying to ban them completely would be quite isolating. Just make sure wholefoods make up the majority of your kid’s diet.
Some fish - Large fish, high up in the food chain (like shark, marlin and swordfish) can be high in mercury. This is something to be particularly wary of in small children because their little bodies will be more affected by it. Mercury is toxic and can interfere with brain development. Don’t panic if your children have a little bit - just try to limit exposures so that mercury doesn’t build up in their bodies. Low mercury, high omega 3 fish like salmon, sardines, trout and mackerel.
Ok hear me out. I’m not saying your little 3 year old gets free access to unlimited lollies and chippies all day (we all know that bad choices would be made if that was the case). Have a draw and a shelf in the fridge that your child has free access to during the day and fill it with healthy snack options. Encouraging some autonomy over food from an early age helps kids to feel confident when making food choices and gets them more in tune with their bodies and nutritional needs. Need some snack inspo?
Bonus benefit: more free time for you, as you will be relieved from your ‘personal snack servant’ duties.
Being involved in food preparation helps kids of all ages build healthy relationships with food. Little kids love being included and they are far more likely to try new foods if they were involved in the preparation. And when kids are older and looking to head out on their own, cooking won’t seem like such a daunting task if they have been involved in the cooking at home from a young age. Need some recipe inspo? We have plenty of kid friendly recipes on our blog!
Bonus Benefit: By the time your kids are teens, you can enjoy a few nights off cooking. Personal chef anyone?? That's why we had kids right?!
Including food in your day, outside meal time, can have a great impact on how kids feel about food overall. Encourage curiosity, enthusiasm and imagination by playing games that include food, reading books, and having happy conversations.
Offer a variety of foods so that your child gets used to seeing foods that are unfamiliar. Even if these new foods are regularly rejected at the start, it’s great practice for kids to be exposed to different foods. Long term this broadens their horizons, and makes them much more flexible human beings.
Bonus Benefit: That overseas holiday will become a little less terrifying if your kids are open to unfamiliar foods.
I know this one is hard! Your kids aren’t eating dinner, bed time is fast approaching and you really just want them to eat SOMETHING! But kids are wired to find our weaknesses and if we start offering them their ‘safe’ foods as a replacement to their dinner then rejecting dinner will become a very regular occurrence. We just have to remind ourselves that, as caregivers, our responsibility is to make plenty of healthy food available - but it is up to our kids if they eat, and how much they eat. They won’t starve.

The digestive system breaks down the foods we fuel our body with into nutrients our body can use. Improving digestion means fueling your body with the right kinds of foods like leafy greens, low fructose fruits and vegetables, pre and probiotics, fermented foods, lean protein, bone broth, gelatin and collagen.
While nutrition is one of the main things you can consume to support digestion and gut wellbeing, there are some other things you can also do to improve digestion. Hydration, adequate exercise, staying on top of stress levels, avoiding foods that can clog you up (fried foods, refined sugars, too much bread, dairy, acidic foods, processed foods, excessive alcohol and caffeine) and getting enough sleep is what helps digestion for a happy gut.
Specific foods to help digestion alongside leafy greens include vegetables, lean meats (like fish and chicken) and low fructose fruits (like apple and pineapple), ginger, chia seeds, turmeric, licorice, lemon balm, mint, mushroom, fennel and fermented foods like sauerkraut and yoghurt. As mentioned above, our super greens powder, bone broth, gelatin and collagen are also great for improving digestion and supporting a happy gut thanks to the essential amino acids.
Incorporating the above foods into your diet, alongside a healthy balanced lifestyle, is what helps digestion and gut wellbeing. Lacking some inspiration or need ideas for incorporating your super greens powder in recipes alongside other foods to improve digestion? Natural Vitamins come from a variety of wholefood sources (fruit, vegetables, spices, herbs, algae, seeds, amongst many others). These natural vitamins are extracted from a natural source and contain a variety of other beneficial nutrients and co-factors. They are often assimilated more easily by the body and are usually considered safe.
Synthetic Vitamins are chemically created in a laboratory and are often isolated from their co-factors. They may not be as easily absorbed or utilised by the body as natural vitamins.
Overall natural sources of vitamins are generally considered superior to lab made ones, due to the presence of other beneficial macronutrients (example co-factors) and better recognition and absorption by the body.
Natural Minerals are obtained from naturally occurring sources such as rocks, soil, and water. These naturally extracted minerals contain a variety of other beneficial minerals and trace elements that help the body to absorb and utilise them properly.
Synthetic Minerals, on the other hand, are chemically produced in a laboratory and are created chemically by combining various elements. They are typically isolated and do not contain other beneficial mineral co-factors that aid absorption and utilisation.
While both natural and synthetic minerals can be effective for providing essential minerals to the body, the body will often more readily absorb natural minerals because they are more easily recognised by the body.
Some of the ways you can spot synthetics in your foods is through the ingredients list. Have you ever noticed the differences in the naming convention for certain vitamins and minerals? Depending on the way they are listed, you can tell if they come from a natural or synthetic source. See some examples below:
The list is constantly being added to as time passes and technology develops. If you’re ever unsure of ingredients on a label, spend some time researching its source. Where it comes from is important! At Nutra Organics we only use wholefood sources of vitamins & minerals that are actually natural. You won’t spot any synthetic vitamins in any of our formulations - that’s a promise!
]]>Although a bit of laziness, whinging and feet-dragging is a totally normal thing for a child to do, persistent lethargy is a sign of potential nutrient deficiency. Having low energy, not feeling motivated or excited by anything and fatigue can all be caused by inadequate vitamins and minerals. Pinpointing the cause of lethargy is tricky, because our bodies require adequate amounts of everything to thrive and feel energised. It could be an iron deficiency which leads to inadequate oxygen supply, a B vitamin deficiency which slows down metabolism, or it could be as simple as not consuming enough carbohydrates or kilojoules throughout the day. If your child is showing signs of lethargy, feed them up with plenty of starchy foods and leafy greens. If symptoms persist it’s time to chat to your health care professional to get to the bottom of what's going on. Need help boosting your kiddos iron? Try this Sneaky Veg Banana Bread featuring our Thriving Family & Veggie Hero.
Irregular bowel movements can be a sign that your child isn’t getting enough fibre and/or water. Especially if your kiddo is a fussy eater and tends to reject fibrous textures (like all vegetables). Not getting enough fibre goes hand-in-hand with missing out on other essential nutrients, as so many of our best high-fibre foods are also vitamins and mineral powerhouses (like broccoli, pumpkin, carrot, capsicum, beans and avocado). If you notice your child is a bit constipated, really try to focus on feeding them plenty of fruits, vegetables and water. If they are really fussy you can always try and sneak some Super Tummy into the food you know they will eat (like bliss balls, plant based milk smoothies or in spreads such as peanut butter and avocado).
One of the first physical signs that your child has a nutrient deficiency is in their skin. Skin cells turn over quickly, so inadequate nutrition will become evident on the surface of the skin very fast. Dry or irritated skin can be caused by insufficient healthy fats, dehydration, inadequate vitamins or minerals, or even undiagnosed food sensitivities. Try to include oily fish, nuts and avocados in your child's diet, as well as plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Consuming your fruit and vegetables fresh ensures that the heat sensitive vitamins and phytochemicals are still intact when eaten. Vitamin c is an especially sensitive nutrient, so consuming some fresh vitamin C containing foods every day is the best way to avoid deficiency. For fun a gut loving snack, try these Homemade Vitamin Gummies with Veggie Hero & Gutsy Gummies!

When it comes to superfood powder and foods to boost immunity, Nutra Organics has got you covered! So, you can feel confident in your wholefood immunity powder for immunity support all year round.
The topic of how to best support your immune system is a thoroughly researched one with experts all agreeing that nutrition and a healthy balanced lifestyle should be the first point of call as food contains vital nutrients our bodies need to survive and thrive.
I’m sure that we can all agree none of us willingly want to get sick right? Ain’t nobody got time for that. But the flip side of that desire is building a strong immunity, and immunity support begins with a healthy diet filled with wholefoods and nutrients that are proven to support the immune system.
These 10 tips for immunity support include primarily nutrients found in wholefoods, but it’s important to mention here that immunity support is a whole body ordeal, and can’t just be helped by immune support vitamins. Learning to look after and love your body is an ongoing journey, so try one thing at a time as you work on supporting your immunity from every angle.
B vitamins are essential for cell health, the creation of new red blood cells and overall energy production. The immune system (especially when it’s exposed to lots of pathogens) uses up a lot of energy, so it’s one of the first things to suffer when energy production isn’t happening at an optimal level. B vitamins are found in meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy, legumes, seeds, leafy greens and nutritional yeast. Our Nutra Organics picks for adding a superfood powder with B vitamins is Super Greens + Reds as a daily greens powder for immunity support, and our Bone Broths. Try our Immune Builder Chicken Curry Soup featuring Chicken Bone Broth Turmeric with B vitamins.
Vitamin C is probably the most famous nutrient for immunity support. It is essential for many cellular functions of the innate and adaptive immune systems. When your body is fighting off a virus (or other pathogen) vitamin C is churned through at a much higher rate, as it accumulates in phagocytes (immune cells that are responsible for the consumption and destruction of pathogens within the body) to assist with the destruction of the infection. There are many great sources of Vitamin C for immunity support, some of our favourite sources are found in fruits (especially Kakadu plum, guava, acerola cherries and kiwis), capsicums, leafy greens, brussel sprouts, lemons and herbs like parsley. You can get 100% of your RDI of vitamin C in Collagen Beauty, Acai Berry Blend, Berry Immune and Super Greens + Reds. Try our Glory Greens Immunity Shot with your daily dose of Collagen Beauty for a powerful punch of immune support vitamins.
Vitamin D is known to be an immune system ‘modulator’. It helps to increase the rate of the production of pathogen fighting proteins, but it also helps to dampen the inflammatory response of white blood cells (as an overactive immune system can also be harmful to our bodies and cause autoimmune diseases). Great sources of vitamin D for immunity support include oily fish, egg yolks, red meat, mushrooms, spinach, oranges, bananas and of course sunshine. When you can’t get enough of these foods to boost immunity, Nutra Organics Bone Broths, Thriving Family and Super Greens + Reds are a great daily immunity support. Try the Morning Multi Smoothie which combines both Thriving Family and Super Greens + Reds for a delicious superfood powder boost.
Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin, potent anti-inflammatory and is found in high concentrations in immune cells. Vitamin E enhances T cell function (T cells are very important cells in the immune system. They kill infected host cells directly, but also upregulate the production and function of other immune cells) and help to reduce inflammation caused by infection and the immune response. Vitamin E is most commonly found in wheat, nuts, seeds, avocados and oily fish. Super Greens + Reds is your go-to for a superfood powder with vitamin E for immunity support.
Vitamin A is vital for many important functions and processes in the body like vision, growth & development, reproduction and the immune system. Vitamin A works to enhance and support the immune system as well as supporting the body's fight to reduce inflammation. Vitamin A can be found in leafy greens, orange and yellow vegetables, beef liver, fish oils, milk, eggs, mango, rockmelon and capsicum. Vitamin A can be found in Super Greens + Reds and Veggie Hero. Try Our Veggie Hero Sausage Rolls for a yummy boost.
A happy balanced microbiome is vitally important when it comes to immunity. The gut is the first line of defence from many pathogens. It helps to prevent the growth of harmful disease-causing pathogens as well as train immune cells, helping them to recognise harmful cells and destroy them before they have a chance to cause harm or disease. Pre and probiotics are found in foods like yoghurt, sauerkraut, whole grains, bananas, greens, onions, garlic, soybeans and artichokes. Pre and Probiotics can be found in our Thriving Family, Clean Proteins, Super Greens + Reds. Try our Strawberry Surprise Smoothie Bowl for a sweet immunity support breakfast or snack.
Polyphenols are types of antioxidants that help to neutralise free radicals. They assist the immune system by helping with phagocytosis, and reducing the inflammation caused by the immune response.
Iron is essential for new cell production and maturation (which is in high demand when fighting off infection). Insufficient iron weakens the immune response, but on the flip side, too much free iron can mean providing extra nutrients for the pathogen. So, support your body by providing adequate iron but not going overboard.
Super Greens + Reds contains 28% of your daily recommended iron intake per serve, which is a good immunity support in a healthy, varied diet. Iron is also found in liver, red meats, leafy greens, legumes, peas, grains like quinoa, tofu and dark chocolate. Add a daily dose of Super Greens + Reds for iron and immunity support, does your daily greens powder do it all? This one does!
Magnesium is an important cofactor in lots of reactions that occur during a healthy immune response. It is particularly important for immunoglobulin synthesis (which is a protein antibody that binds to viruses and other pathogens, helping to destroy them). Magnesium can be found in cacao powder, chia seeds, nuts, legumes, oily fish, oats, leafy greens, whole grains and avocados.
Magnesium for immunity support can also be found in our Super Greens + Reds, Collagen Build, Thriving Family, Clean Greens, Clean Energy, Clean Recovery and Clean Protein. Try the Ultimate Post Workout Smoothie for an extra dose of immune support vitamins.
Zinc is arguably the most famous mineral when it comes to immunity, with good reason, as it is essential in many functions of the immune system. Zinc is needed in the first line of defence from pathogens by assisting in barrier function of the skin, gut and airways. Zinc is also needed for the growth and development of immune cells that respond to specific pathogens (such as neutrophils and natural killer cells). Zinc can be found in oysters, red meat, poultry, wholegrains and dairy.
Zinc can also be found in our Super Greens + Reds, Collagen Beauty, Bone Broths powders and concentrates and Clean Energy. Try our Laksa Broth Noodle Jars for an immunity boost, this recipe is packed full of immunity foods plus Bone Broth Concentrate with zinc.
A healthy balanced lifestyle for immunity support entails key elements like adequate sleep, exercise and hydration. Cutting out or cutting down on things like alcohol, smoking, stress where possible, sugary and packaged foods will also work wonders for immunity support. The immune system is dependent on the nutrients and cells transported in our blood stream, and good circulation needs proper hydration and exercise. Hydration is key for waste elimination and temperature regulation, which is vital when you do get sick!
Super Greens + Reds and Clean Recovery contains electrolytes which can contribute to proper fluid balance, and if you’re drinking it in water or juice, then that’s an extra bit of hydration during your day too! And if you’re struggling to get that exercise in, Clean Energy can give you that boost of energy needed. On the flip side, winding down can be made a whole lot more sweet and nutritious with the likes of Captain Calm.

A lack of the right nutrients can lead to upset tummies and poor gut health, and a child’s gut health and microbiome are formed in the first four years, after which time it can be impacted by nutrition, diet and other lifestyle factors. A healthy gut for kids contributes to some super important areas like immunity, mood, digestion, sleep, brain health, heart health and skin health. Maintaining gut wellbeing has a positive roll-on effect on these important areas of whole body wellbeing.
However, kids can be fussy, there’s no arguing with that, and sometimes no matter the bragging and bribing it can be hard for them to get their daily quota of nutrients. Further, high levels of refined sugars (found in many kids treats) can disrupt the balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut, leading to inflammation and leaky gut syndrome.

]]>If you’re a newcomer or need a little recap on the benefits of bone broth and how exactly it is naturally nourishing, it comes down to the beneficial collagen protein, essential amino acids (found in our Bone Broth Concentrates & beef and chicken bone broth powders) and wholefood zinc and B vitamins, plus loads of wholefood veggies in our Vegetable Broths.
Before you cringe and shudder at the thought of broth in the morning instead of your coffee, just remember coffee may give you a quick boost, but often it means an afternoon crash. While coffee certainly has its benefits, the benefits of bone broth first thing in the morning far outweigh the benefits of coffee.
So why first thing in the morning you ask? The naturally occurring glutamine, proline and glycine in bone broth have been shown to maintain gut wellbeing by protecting the lining of the digestive tract. This means the first thing to enter your digestive system is a nourishing and soothing broth to set you and your digestion up for the day ahead. Feeding your gut with bone broth first thing in the morning will have a soothing effect, so if you struggle with digestive discomfort or the like, it can be a great add-on to support your digestive system. Plus Glycine has been shown to naturally increase our bodies’ serotonin, which stabilises mood, wellbeing and all those general feelings of happiness.
The protein in broth also allows our bodies to be fuller for longer, studies have shown when we eat enough protein our chances of having cravings are much lower, 10.30 am sweet tooth cravings we’re looking at you.
Bone broth and vegetable broth is not only a delicious and natural flavour enhancer for soups, stews, gravies and savoury meals, but it also infuses your meal with all the benefits of bone broth. So when you cook up your savoury meal, replace using regular store bought stock for a Nutra Organics Bone Broth for added nutritional value.
Check out our blog to learn more about the differences between broth and stock and the added benefits of switching store-bought stock for our naturally nourishing bone broths.
This bone broth hack is strictly a job for bone broth powders and vegetable broth powders. Simply sprinkle your choice of bone broth powder onto your salads, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, avocado toast and anywhere else you normally use salt or pepper or seasoning. Our bone broth powders contain salt and pepper to bring out and add flavour to your meals, plus with the additional benefits and flavours (like Mushroom, Miso Ramen, Garden Herb and Turmeric) that compliment salads, eggs and toast.
Our bone broth powders and concentrates are ultra versatile and great to boost not only the nutritional value of a meal, but also to enhance the flavour profile naturally and with ease. Some great examples of this and our favourites are; Brothy Roast Potatoes, Thai Style Roast Pumpkin Soup, 15 Minutes Chilli Beef Noodles and Caramelised Chicken Broth Gyozas.
Spiking your meals with gut and immune bolstering benefits means the fussy kids in the family will be none the wiser to the nutritional benefits you’re sneaking into their delicious meals. Our favourite recipes for kids broth infused meals are The Nutritious Land Before Time, Veggie Hero Rice Cakes, Chicken Couscous and Satay Veggie Noodles.
Some studies have shown that ingesting a good quality bone broth before and after exercise can enhance performance and speed up the recovery process. Taking bone broth at least one hour before exercise is optimal for bodily digestion and energy. The late great NBA star Kobe Bryant swore by bone broth for recovery of bones, muscles and enhanced performance, that’s a slam dunk for bone broth right there.
Bone broth is also great for your bones, skin, hair and nails, it’s the gut health flow that brings that outer glow. Feeling beautiful, energetic and healthy with multiple benefits - need any more reasons to take your broth everyday?
Bone Broth has many uses and benefits that outnumber five simple ways (we had to condense them into five), and is an absolute pantry staple to use in your everyday life or to add to your wellness routines. We’ve found one of the keys to longevity when it comes to healthy habits is small steps, plus mixing up the routine to keep it fresh and fun - because wellness doesn’t have to be boring and bland, just ask our broths!
]]>There is quite a lot of confusion out there about whether broth and stock are the same thing, and although you can use broth instead of stock (we’ll get into that in a moment) there are a few key differences. There are many articles that will tell you that stock is often made from bones and broth is made from meat, it’s all relative to the brand and if it is simply broth or bone broth.
Our bone broth powders (chicken and beef) and bone broth concentrates are made from primarily bones. Chicken bones or beef bones are added to filtered water and apple cider vinegar (to maximise nutrient extraction) and then slow-cooked for hours. The broth is then strained for impurities and then the fat is skimmed off the top. Depending on the flavour profile we will then add the highest quality and all-natural flavours, herbs and spices. For the bone broth powders, it is then gently refractance dried into a powder, taking care to preserve the nutritional profile.
Stock commonly bought from the supermarket isn’t slow-cooked and is often packed with fillers, sugar, glucose, colours and preservatives. Stock is often made from beef and sometimes bones and vegetables. While so much information out there will tell you broth is made only from meat, make sure you are reading the labels as broth and bone broth are quite different. If your main takeaway from this is to always read the label, look at the quality, avoid nasties and look at the nutritional value offered - then you’re on the money, this is where the main difference will be.
The short answer here is, yes! Broth and stock are pretty much interchangeable, so where you would normally use stock in soups, stews and gravies, you can use bone broth powders and concentrates and enjoy all the nutritional benefits as well as the delicious flavours that enhance your cooking.
Make sure to read the package directions for our bone broth for the specific amounts of water to add, as concentrates and powders will differ. Our Beef Bone Broth Concentrates are rich in flavour profile and require less for enhancing your cooking, whereas our Bone Broth Powders have a more subtle and soft flavour, which is great for travelling, sprinkling on salads and making a cup of nutritional broth on the go. Our broth powders and concentrates can both be used for the exact same purposes, it really comes down to personal preference with type and flavour.
When looking at the benefits of bone broth compared to stock you really do have to look at the specific brand as not all bone broths are equal and not all stocks are equal. While we can’t speak for every stock in general or even every bone broth, we most certainly can speak to the efficacy of our bone broth concentrates and powders in comparison to store-bought stocks.
Bone Broth has been used for centuries to support immunity, gut, bones, glowing skin and so much more. Our Beef Bone Broth Concentrates and powders are a nutritious alternative to homemade broth - because ain't nobody got time for 24 hours of slow cooking.
In terms of bone broth benefits, our bone broth concentrates and powder bone broths are much the same. Our Beef Bone Broth Concentrates are naturally nourishing with over 40% collagen protein, plus zinc to support immunity, bone support & gut wellbeing. While our chicken and beef bone broth powders also support immunity, energy and gut wellbeing with zinc and B vitamins.
Our vegetable broths also contain amazing benefits with calcium, zinc, folate & B vitamins to support immunity, energy and gut wellbeing. The vegetable broths are naturally delicious and gently refractance dried into a powder for maximum nutrients. Our broths won't be beaten on flavour & nutritional benefits, which makes them the perfect alternative to store-bought stocks for cooking and to drink on their own as a yummy nutritional cup of broth.
Aside from having bone broth in hot water first thing in the morning, bone broth has also made an appearance in loads of our crowd-favourite recipes. Including family-friendly recipes, snacks, lunches and dinners on the fly or dinners to impress with the in-laws. Some of our personal favourites are Mushroom Tagliatelle, Classic Beef Stew, 15 Minute Butterbean Stew, Instant Noodle Broth and Brothy Roast Potatoes.
So when it comes to using broth or storebought stock in your cooking and on its own, it really does come down to understanding the key differences between the two as well as the key benefits of the bone broth. In terms of what our bone broths offer, it’s a no-brainer for us to swap out store-bought stocks for our nutritional Bone Broth Range made from grass-fed Australian Beef Bones, Australian, Certified Organic, Free Range Chicken Bones and high quality (organic where possible) vegetables, herbs and spices.
]]>“Our audience asked, so we did it! Nutra Organics has always been known for its nutritious and delicious bone broth powders. We started with plain broth powders and quickly expanded our range to 14 different flavour varieties of broths ranging from beef to chicken to vegetable. Along with requests from our loyal people, aka customers, we also saw a need for a high quality bone broth concentrate on the market, and so was born our Beef Bone Broth concentrates.” - Ricki Harrison, Nutra Organics COO.
Bone broth uses a slow cooking method to extract maximum flavour and nutrition from the bones of grass fed beef cattle. You might be surprised to find that bone broth concentrate originates from prehistoric times, and gained more popularity from traditional use in Chinese medicine. Bone broth is often referred to as 'liquid gold' and this reputation has unsurprisingly stuck around for the long run because of the numerous benefits of bone broth. Bone broth is commonly used now for enhancing the flavour of meals or as a delicious hot cup of broth and to support immunity, gut, skin and bone health.
Bone broth is consumed around the world and tooted by celebrities, athletes and wellbeing enthusiasts for its many nutritional benefits. The benefits of bone broth make consuming these delicious bone broth concentrates one of the easiest and most delicious ways to boost your wellbeing.
Bone broth concentrate is great for immunity, thanks to the nutrients that affect the gut, as the majority of our immune system lives in the gut. The health of your gut contributes to some super important areas like immunity, mood, digestion, sleep, brain health, heart health and skin health. Maintaining gut wellbeing has a positive roll-on effect for the immune system and for whole body wellbeing. Our Bone Broth Concentrates are also grass fed and grass fed bone broth is richer in nutrients and antioxidants, which the immune system will love you for.
Bone broth concentrates are wonderful for boosting gut health. Nutra Organics Bone Broth Concentrates contain over 40% collagen protein, and our collagen protein contains the amino acid L-glutamine. L-glutamine feeds the cells lining the gut, helping them to create a strong surface and healthy lining and therefore a healthier immune system. Try taking your bone broth concentrate when the sun rises as there are many benefits of bone broth first thing in the morning. Look, if Kendall Jenner swears by it, you might be worth giving a go, right?
All of our bone broth concentrates contain apple cider vinegar, which is great for naturally enhancing the extraction of collagen and other nutritious elements from the bone to ensure that our bone broth contains all the possible benefits.
Bone broth is great for energy too, hence why it’s a great coffee replacement first thing in the morning. The energy boost is due to glycine in the collagen protein. Glycine has been shown to increase the body’s serotonin without increasing dopamine, (so no jitters like coffee can do). Glycine is an amino acid the body naturally makes, however there are many times when our body doesn’t make quite enough; like when we’re feeling a little under the weather, therefore our bone broth concentrates are a great energy booster all year round.
In terms of bone broth benefits, our bone broth concentrates and powder bone broths are much the same with benefits for the immune system, gut wellbeing and energy. However, in terms of flavour profile, format and uses, there are a few key differences.
Our bone broth concentrates have a rich flavour profile, meaning it’s great for soups, stews, gravies and cooking with a smaller amount needed, whereas our powder bone broths have a delicate flavour profile. Our bone broth concentrates also need to be refrigerated once opened and used within 4 weeks, and our powders are more shelf stable and better for travelling.
Our bone broth concentrates are super versatile and easy to add into your daily routines and weekly meals. So if you’ve been wondering how to drink bone broth or how to use bone broth, keep reading for some easy tips and delicious, drool-worthy recipes with all the benefits of bone broth included.

]]>A little planning goes a long way, especially when it comes to getting the family fed. Family meal planning also goes a long way to save money and time, reduce stress, reduce waste, improve nutrition and improve variety, aka, reduce complaints about the same meal from fusspot kids. Okay, let’s get practical, here are 3 tips for designing and executing a winning meal plan for you and your family.
Look at the week ahead and know which nights you and your family may be a little stressed for time, and which nights you have a bit more time. On days where there isn't much time, plan meals that are quick and easy to assemble, or better yet, plan large meals for the day before so you know there will be plenty of leftovers.
Get inspired (but not too inspired if you know what we mean) when choosing meals for your family. Choosing meals is a great opportunity to branch out and try something new, but don’t make life difficult by planning 7 different gourmet dinners in one week. Start with one new recipe, if it’s a winner, it can join your regular rotation, if it’s not, then forget about it and move on.
A great meal contains a mixture of complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein, healthy fats and fibre. So to design any balanced meal, it’s as simple as choosing a base (e.g rice, pasta, potatoes or even toast), a protein (e.g meat, eggs, fish, tofu) and then adding colourful fruits and vegetables.
If you have kids over the age of 12 months, you can usually make the same meal for everyone. If you have fussy eaters, make sure each meal contains a mixture of foods that they will usually accept, as well as foods that require a bit more coaxing (or food you know will just straight-up get refused). This is the best way to ensure that they will eat some of their dinner but also build familiarity with the foods that they are struggling with; start with a simple base from your own meal, like potatoes or toast, and sneak veggies in with the likes of Veggie Hero.
Chances are, if you’re the one reading this blog, you're also the one who does most of the shopping and food prep at your house right? You must also be painfully aware then, that it’s not just as simple as going to the shops once a week and then spending 45 minutes in the kitchen at the end of the day. Being the main shopper and food maker comes with a massive mental load. You now need to be aware of all food in your house at all times, know what everyone is eating every day, know when things expire, know what to do with everything before it expires, have food prepped and packed before it’s needed and answer 1000 questions per day about what snacks are available. It’s a full-time logistics role and when you do it well, no one notices because things are just running smoothly, but my goodness if you run out of chippies before the next shop then your darling family will be sure to inform you that your performance isn’t up to scratch. Meal planning will ease that mental load. Create the plan with your family and let everyone contribute ideas. Most importantly, let everyone see how many things need to be considered and done. Delegate some meals to other members of the family (if they are a bit slow to volunteer themselves). Share the shopping or get groceries delivered. Make sure everyone is onboard with both helping and contributing.
We have a huge recipe bank of easy, nutritious, family-friendly meals, as well as meals for the fussiest of kids designed to sneak nutrition into kids so parents can worry about one less thing with nutrition covered.

Symptoms of an irritated gut in kids can range from poor digestion, irregular bowel movements, uncomfortable digestion or stomach aches, and other roll-on effects like poor immunity, sleep, and general fatigue (more than the norm for kids). A healthy gut aids in nutrient absorption, and those nutrients will do some essential things like support the immune system and support growth and development.
Supporting your kid's gut health starts with the right foods and cutting down on foods that can be potential irritants. Diet is responsible for around 75% of a healthy gut.
1. Fibre & hydration - One of the most delicious ways to support your kid’s gut health and wellbeing is by consuming high-quality fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain fibre that contributes to healthy digestion. Fruits and vegetables are soluble fibre, which also helps kids feel fuller for longer, win-win.
Other sources of fibre include whole grains, oats, barley, legumes and potatoes. We completely understand the struggle when it comes to getting fussy kids to get their daily intake of nutrition, fruits and veggies, if that’s you then Veggie Hero is your go-to for wholefood nutrition. With 15 veggies, fruits and super greens designed for kids’ taste buds and parents' peace of mind when it comes to providing healthy meals for picky eaters. Veggie Hero is easy to sneak onto rice cakes, into noodles, into baking and kid's favourite pasta and meals. It’s important to mention here too that with an increase in fibre there must be an increase in water. If kids' bodies aren’t well hydrated it can actually add to constipation. So staying well hydrated is essential alongside fibre intake.
2. Pre and pro-biotics - Pre and pro-biotics feed the good bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics act as food for the microflora and probiotics improve the good bacteria that already exist in the gut. Prebiotics can be found in foods like bananas, oats, barley, flaxseed and of course in our family-friendly Thriving Protein. Thriving Protein contains sprouted & bio-fermented pea and brown rice proteins combined with prebiotics & 1 billion CFU of probiotics per serve, Thriving Protein supports gut health and is easily digestible for tiny tummies. Thriving Protein also delivers a wholesome boost of protein, calcium, iron, selenium, vitamins C, D, E, folate and other B vitamins, all from organic wholefoods to support optimal health and wellbeing. Other foods with beneficial pre and pro-biotics include yoghurt (lactose-free if your child needs) kefir and fermented vegetables. Remember too that if you are breastfeeding, probiotics will be transferred to your bubba via milk and skin contact.
3.Vitamin C - Vitamin C is essential for the growth, development and repair of all tissues and is great for collagen production which is essential in connective tissue, such as the gut lining, and a healthy gut lining is essential for a healthy gut. Vitamin C is also involved in the absorption of iron, a healthy functioning immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth. Berry Immune is our top pick for a great vitamin C boost with bioavailable vitamin C, zinc, iron & vitamin D from magical ingredients like rosehip, sea buckthorn, echinacea and 9 super berries.
4. Collagen & Gelatin - Collagen and Gelatin are not only high-quality proteins, but they also contain the amino acid L-glutamine which feeds the cells lining the gut, helping them to create a strong surface and healthy lining. As a total win, kids love squishy and bouncy gummies. Hot tip, make gummies with gelatin and combine with Choc Whiz, Berry Immune, Captain Calm or Veggie Hero for some extra flavour and wholefood nutrition. Check out our gummy recipes for some ‘gum-spiration’.

In our quest to make nutrition for kids fun and create food for fussy toddlers and kids, we created our best-selling Superfoods for Kids range. These superfood powder products have been supercharged with wholefood formulations so fussy kids can absorb all the goodness into their growing bodies. These four lifesavers for fussy eaters are Veggie Hero, Berry Immune, Choc Whiz and Captain Calm.
Believe it or not, children aren’t born as fussy eaters, so how do kids become fussy eaters? Fussy eating in kids usually peaks around toddler age (2-5 years of age) and for the most part is quite normal. Some factors that can cause fussy eating in children are things like meals and veggies being too repetitive, introducing new foods or forced and parental eating behaviours modelled to children. Some children are more sensitive to things like textures, smells and tastes, which means they will naturally become quite picky with what they eat, and unfortunately, this often means fruits and veggies are the first things to go, leaving kids with plain pasta and cheese - we’ve all been there.
According to the National Institute of Health, from ages 3 to 11, between 13% and 22% of children were reported to be picky eaters and 39% of children were identified as picky eaters at some point during a study. These statistics mean that 39% of children at some point may not be getting enough nutrition in their diet or the right nutrients they need for growth, development, energy and immunity, among other things.
When kids start rejecting foods regularly, it can become a serious problem in regard to nutrition and it can become increasingly hard to know which is the best food for fussy toddlers. Especially as the kinds of foods kids tend to commonly reject are odd textures like vegetables and fruit, which equals a whole lot of nutrition and fibre. This also means kids are less likely to consume B vitamins, vitamin C and antioxidants, along with reduced exposure to natural pre and probiotics if they only eat processed foods.
Another common food kids tend to have a mealtime standoff over is meats and proteins, as these can sometimes be harder to chew and have a more mature/acquired taste. Protein is essential for growing bodies; an insufficient amount of protein can affect a fussy eaters mental and physical health. Protein provides essential amino acids, and without a sufficient supply may lead to fatigue, lack of concentration, slowed growth and poor immunity.
When it comes to making meals for fussy eaters that are both nutritious and delicious, you could say we know a thing or two. From lunch box ideas for fussy eaters to interactive meals with fun textures, we have a huge recipe bank of yummy and nutritious meals your fussy eaters will absolutely love. ]]>While being a kid has so many great perks that I’m sure we all miss at times (hello indoor makeshift obstacle courses), being sick isn’t one of them. Immunity boosters for kids can be tricky with little one’s picky and particular taste buds. However, there are some really great ways to support your child's ability to fight off nasty bugs, lessen the duration of illness and make their day a little brighter with some hero foods, kids immunity vitamins for fussy eaters. Here’s how to boost kids' immune systems with our award winning and fusspot approved Nutra Organics Kids Superfood Range.
Studies show that a diet rich in phytonutrients, found in fruits and veggies, can increase the body's production of infection fighting white blood cells and antibodies that block out viruses, therefore increasing immunity. Fruits and vegetables (as well as grains, meats and dairy) contain key essential vitamins and minerals to make sure your child has the best fighting chance, such as vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K, as well as zinc, calcium, iron and iodine. These essential vitamins and minerals support growth and development and are essential for kids as part of getting their daily intake of fruits and vegetables and complete nutrition. By increasing your child's daily dose of kid's multivitamin powder, like Berry Immune or Veggie Hero you are helping to boost their immunity with extra vitamins and minerals.
Experts recommend 4 - 5 servings of vegetables and fruit as an immunity booster for kids depending on age of course. We understand that this can be a hard task, especially for fussy eaters. Introducing kids immunity vitamins into this mix will aid in immunity, especially for said fussy eaters who simply refuse to eat fruits and vegetables. Nutrition for children can be fun, and that was exactly what we set out to achieve when creating our kids range, including Veggie Hero, Berry Immune, Captain Calm and Choc Whiz. Created to be versatile, delicious and easy to use year round for children in daycare or school who are exposed to more bacteria, in other words, all kids. So you can have peace of mind knowing you’re giving your kids enough support. Our kids immunity vitamins were created by our in house nutritionist and formulated to contain bioavailable vitamins & minerals from pure, organic wholefoods. Including all the essentials to give kids energy, cognitive function, emotional wellbeing and more.

1. Nutrition
What you put in is what you will get out with nutrition. Eating enough fruits and vegetables in a variety of colours will ensure your body is getting it’s daily fill of nutrients to give your body the fuel it needs to function properly. This in turn affects such things like energy, regular bowel movements, brain function and immunity. This is why we created a daily wellness elixir in the form of Super Greens + Reds, with 23 nourishing greens and reds to support immunity, energy, gut wellbeing, acid-alkaline balance and antioxidant protection.
2. Gut health
The correlation between a healthy gut and a healthy functioning body is inseparable. Eating a range of fruits, vegetables and pre and probiotics contributes to a healthy gut and healthy microbiome. Our favourite gut lovin’ Collagen Beauty and Gelatin are versatile products that provide collagen protein with key amino acids for tissue building, repair and gut wellbeing. As well as Thriving Protein and Clean protein containing our superstar pre and probiotic Ganeden.
3. Water
Staying hydrated is far more than never getting thirsty. Dehydration can cause a feeling of fatigue, both physically and mentally, as well as a myriad of other possible, not so lovely feelings like constipation and anxiety. Whereas staying hydrated has been shown to regulate body temperature whilst delivering nutrients to cells, and keeping organs functioning properly. Try to get a minimum of 2L of good quality water per day!
4. Sleep
Getting that precious shut eye is far more than beauty sleep, affecting our inner health and brain function. Getting around 8 hours of sleep is the recommendation for most adults, give or take an hour. As you can imagine, lack of sleep can cause lack of motivation to exercise and eat well. Oftentimes leading to a quick fix for energy instead of nutritious wholefoods.
5. Movement
Along with improving your gut wellbeing and strengthening your bones and muscles, exercise also improves blood flow. This increases the oxygen levels which contribute to energy levels, as well as cognitive function. Exercise doesn’t have to look like pumping weights or an hour in the gym, a simple walk or 5 minutes of exercise can still impact your overall wellness for the better.
6. Meditate
Meditation is free and it doesn’t have to take more than 5 - 10 minutes to be highly beneficial. There’s loads of research around meditation and its effects on overall wellbeing. The biggest findings being a sense of balance, a calm mind, a greater attention span and an ability to cope with stress. Create a calm and quite space and start with a few minutes at a time of intentional meditation and mindfulness.
7. Get outside
Studies have shown getting outside more often can lower stress, heart rate and blood pressure. In layman's terms, nature makes us happy. Especially when getting outside involves a healthy dose of Vitamin D. Vitamin D has been show to aid the body in helping to absorb and retain calcium and phosphorous.
8. Cut back on stress
Stress can cause more than a metaphorical and literal headache, it can cause stomach pain, chest pain and trouble sleeping. A great way to identify and cut out stress is to write down a list of things that cause stress, the next to it ways to alleviate them, or things that reduce your stress that you can schedule into your week, even if it’s a daily 5 minute meditation. Each one of us is so different here, a walk on the beach sounds relaxing for some and to others the mention of sand and salty air makes your skin crawl - do what works for you!
9. Get creative
Getting the creative juices flowing has been shown to improve brain function, physical health and support the immune system. As well as being proven to relieve stress and anxiety. The list of creative outlets is lengthy, but here’s some suggestions to try or learn if you’re looking for inspiration: learning a musical instrument, painting, drawing, colouring in, journaling, dancing or getting creative in the kitchen.
10. Laughter is the best medicine
Before you write this one off, trust us when we say the scientific research behind this one is quite mind blowing. While smiling and laughing isn’t always the easiest thing to do after a tough day, Smiling and laughing releases tiny endorphins that reduce stress and can even boost your ability in coping with stress.

]]>Making mealtimes fun is a great way to encourage healthy eating for kids. Sometimes this can mean getting creative and turning your meals into playful works of art (The Nutritious Land Before Time is one of our recent favourites). When it comes to kids' health, sometimes it just means that you need to bring some fun and imaginative energy to the table. Keeping the energy light, fun and playful encourages kids to try new things and get involved, no more nagging for the broccoli to go down. Nutrition for kids isn’t just about getting the nutrients in today, it’s about developing a healthy relationship and healthy eating habits for kids health long term.

Do your kids constantly reject certain foods? It’s frustrating right?! Well don't give up (unless they are allergic or it actually makes them sick). Rather than not buying that food any more, just serve up smaller portions, regularly, alongside foods that your kids have already deemed “acceptable.” Seeing the food over and over again will make the food more familiar, and smaller portions will make it less intimidating. Eventually, your little one may just surprise you and behind eating foods that will benefit the kids health.
The dinner plate is no place for an aesthetically pleasing neutral palette when it comes to healthy eating for kids. You want that plate to explode with colour. The more colourful the better. Colour is nature's way of communicating a variety of nutrients, and kids are just instinctively drawn to it. If they are eating colour, they are eating healthy (unless it's lollies - that's definitely not what we mean. The colour has to come from nature not preservatives.

There's nothing wrong with a little bit of stealthy nutrition to top up kids nutritional intake for the day. Do your kids just flat out reject vegetables, but think pasta is fine? Well puree up as much veggie action as you can and then coat the pasta in the veggie sauce. You just do what you gotta do sometimes. Nutrition for kids by stealth was a huge part of the inspiration behind our superfood supplements for kids range, consisting of Veggie Hero, Choc Whiz, Berry Immune and Captain Calm. In an ideal world, our kids would be eating all the fruit and vegetables by choice, in a less than ideal world, it's good to have a few tricks up our sleeves for our kids' health.
Sometimes this one is easier said than done, but it still needs to be said. Take your time around meal time! To encourage healthy eating and healthy relationships with food, the feeling of rushing needs to go. Especially with really small kids, food and eating is an exploration and a learning process that is essential for kids’ health and nutrition. Having one foot out the door when you're trying to get everyone fed is a recipe for disaster. Allowing time for kids to try a little bit of this and that during meal times, and throughout the day, will result in kids consuming more nutrition (and a messy home, but these tips are all about nutrition, the house can wait).

1. De-stress
When it comes to reasons most children and people can’t get to sleep and stay asleep, stress is pretty high up there, literally, it’s number one. A great way to de-stress is to create wellness rituals and habits that foster a stress-free environment for your child. Calming music, cutting screen time down before bed, making sure your room is dark enough (child depending, sometimes a soft night light might be needed) , taking a bath, deep breathing, a calming hot drink (Captain Calm is our go-to) stretching and yoga are all great ways to relax your mind and body. Try just one at a time and see which works best for your child, remember, each child is different.
2. Consistency is key baby
Creating a consistent bedtime and routine tailored to each individual child's needs will see them get the best sleep possible. Getting to sleep and waking up at the same time each day (yes, even the weekends) creates a great circadian rhythm in your child's body. Irregular sleeping patterns can cause a drop in melatonin levels which our brain needs to sleep. Consistency will create better sleep long term, our brains love a routine more than a daily planner, and even though your child may hate routine, their body will love it.
3. Food for thought
The foods we eat and the times we eat them can heavily affect our quality of sleep. Eating too close to going to bed can cause indigestion, as can stimulants and heavier foods, avoid these too close to bed time. On the flip side, there are foods that can actually aid your children in drifting off to dreamland. Foods to help you sleep is a whole other blog, but we took the liberty of doing all the research and put the best of the best like bioavailable magnesium, vitamin D, B vitamins, soothing passionflower, lemon balm and chamomile to make the most delicious combination inside our Captain Calm.
4. Daily movement
Most children have lots of energy, so making sure they have time to get this out is vital. Be sure not to stimulate their minds or do too many activities with lots of movement too close to bedtime though, this can be too stimulating and keep them up, no thanks. As a general rule of thumb, keep physical activity to a minimum at least 2 hours before bedtime.
5. A safe and sleepy space
Creating a safe and peaceful environment will help your child unwind and let the body and brain know that it’s time for bed. Kids are far more likely to sleep when they feel safe. Try making their sleep environment as comfortable as possible; soft sheets, a good room temperature, breathable pyjamas, a salt lamp, a toy to guard from scary monsters or an essential oil spray can all help in creating a safe and calm environment.
Sleep affects how kids function each and every day, so much more than beauty sleep right? It’s why we created our newest calming and soothing superfood Captain Calm, great for the whole family, especially the fussy and restless little ones, plus the flavour is a dream (pun intended).

]]>Kids have a tonne of energy, that’s no secret, but we formed a secret weapon for restless little minds and bodies. It’s called, *drumroll please*, Captain Calm!
It’s a low sugar bubblegum flavoured afternoon or pre-bedtime drink that supports:
This nifty new superhero joins the Superfoods for Kids gang and ticks all the boxes when it comes to making a kids product that is fusspot approved, outrageously delicious, easy to add into cooking, baking, snacks and is filled with bioavailable wholefood nutrition.
So what’s inside you ask? Aside from calming magic of course, Captain Calm contains:
What a crew on board Captain Calm right?
You might notice we suggest mixing your Captain Calm with full cream cow’s milk or soy milk. Yes we suggest this because it’s delicious, but more importantly, this is for the added benefits of tryptophan. The body uses tryptophan as part of the process of making melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin helps regulate sleep cycles, and serotonin has been known to regulate sleep and moods. So as you can imagine, tryptophan from milk and Captain Calm are the best of mates and love to sail together.
We know that parent life can be so busy that you forget to shower or rarely get the bathroom to yourself (no judgments we’ve all been there). So having one less thing to think about is always a win, plus with the kids getting some calming zen time you can actually have more time for you and the essential things that add to your daily dose of calm. You can have peace of mind knowing you are ticking so many nutritional boxes for your children - who aren't so easy to forget to feed or you’ll most certainly hear about it. When the little minds and bodies are feeling restless and need a little calming, you can easily sneak Captain Calm into their bedtime treats, yoghurts or some cold or warm milk for some extra tryptophan lovin’.
Captain Calm is free from artificial nasties, gluten and refined sugar, but unfortunately it won’t make your kids forget the lyrics to “Let It Go”. With Captain Calm, and the original heroes Berry Immune, Choc Whiz and Veggie Hero, you’ve got some superfood secret weapons up your sleeves. The only problems with these products is they taste so darn good the whole family wants in on them too, lucky they are family friendly.
You can find the new Captain Calm here, happy sipping and sleeping crew! ]]>There’s a reason it’s the most famous probiotic strain on the market, and here at Nutra Organics we are huge fans of this patented, award-winning probiotic superstar. We take gut health seriously when we invest in our health, so of course we only invest in the best. Which is why we can’t wait to tell you all about the benefits of Ganeden, and why we’ve chosen to use it wherever we can.
But first, let’s bring it right back to basics. What is a probiotic? The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) states that probiotics are: “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”
So what makes Ganeden different from other probiotics on the market? We’re so glad you asked. Ganeden is a well researched probiotic with several published articles demonstrating its health benefits which include: digestive support, immune support and protein utilisation. This spore forming probiotic is able to survive high temperatures, oxygen exposure, and the low pH of the stomach, meaning it is still alive when it enters your gut and will be fully effective - so the goodness can keep working its way through the body. It’s any wonder this probiotic superstar is award winning and patented.
The challenge with formulating probiotic foods and beverages is that many strains on the market are more fragile and require refrigeration. If Ganeden could talk it would say, “challenge accepted”. Ganeden is made with a naturally-protective outer layer, so you can bake it, boil it, freeze it or squeeze it and it won’t be affected. It will survive most processing conditions, other probiotics won’t, allowing it to provide the benefits your consumers want.
For example, the most common probiotics on the market are strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. However these microorganisms require very specific environments (like refrigeration) to remain viable. Often found in fermented dairy products, these strains typically cannot be used in products that are shelf-stable or heated. They are also not particularly resistant to high heat and tend to be sensitive to the extremities of acid and alkaline conditions, as found in the stomach. Studies have shown that most microorganisms are quickly killed off in the harsh, acidic environment of the stomach and upper digestive tract. And because these bacteria are fragile, they require refrigeration to remain viable.
Whereas Ganeden has a protective cover around it, making it the perfect solution for shelf stable food products that survive through the gastrointestinal tract. If Ganeden was a contestant on ‘Probiotic Survivor’, it would be a clear winner. Which is why we’ve added it into Super Greens + Reds, Clean Proteins (all three flavours), Thriving Proteins (all three flavours), & Choc Whiz.

When it comes to supporting immunity and development for the baby bears, every parent could do with a little more peace of mind. That’s where we come in. We've simplified the lunch box maths and sectioned food groups and nutrients into the perfect ratios for your cubs. Have confidence that your child’s needs are being met with our guide to what types of foods belong on their plate. Supporting kids’ nutrition and overall health starts with a balanced meal, which is why we’ve put together this lunch box edit.
A balanced plate for your child should include a split of the following: protein, whole grains, vegetables, fruit and fat. Why is this split important you ask? It’s important to make sure your kids are getting both macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein, and fat) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). The more veggies the better, a mix will mean a variety of vegetables, this variety means you're giving their growing bodies an array of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals.
Let’s break it down
Carbohydrates
Carbs are the quickest energy source for your little ones, complex carbohydrates full of natural fiber to support your child's sustained energy and balanced blood sugar levels. Both the metabolism and brain are fueled by carbohydrates and are also essential for the growth and development of their nervous and immune systems.
Protein
Protein and more specifically the building blocks of protein called amino acids are required by every cell in the body. Not only is protein important for your little one’s energy levels and for supporting a restorative sleep, it also plays an essential role in building tissue, muscle function, hormone signalling, stabilising blood sugar and saistity.
Fats
Healthy fats are an essential component of a balanced plate that are used by children for growth, skin health and digestion. Fats help your kids absorb fat-soluble vitamins as well as build tissues of the nervous system and hormones. Fats make meals fun for kids by giving food flavour and texture as well as helping them stay fuller for longer.
Fun
Get your kids involved by asking them to write a list of their favourite fruits, vegetables and sandwich fillings to rotate each week. To keep things interesting, try out some healthy snack recipes like gummies, sweet and savoury muffins or a muesli slice. The more involved they are in choosing, preparing and packing their own lunch box, the more likely they are to eat it all up.
Need a little inspo? Here’s our guide to a balanced lunch box for the little ones. Remember, this is a guide only and absolutely can be tailored to your child’s specific needs or adapted in the case of allergies or certain requirements. If you are ever unsure of how much of any nutrients your child needs due to allergies or other requirements, please consult a nutritionist or dietician.

]]>Supporting your immune system with immunity boosting foods is important all year round - not just in the winter months where we typically dose-up on the immunity support and immune support vitamins. Daily stressors, pollution, inadequate nutrition, insufficient exercise and not enough sunlight can all have an impact on your immune system. One of the best ways to get your immunity support is with wholefoods to deeply nourish, and we have just the immunity foods for the job. So if you’ve been wondering how to boost your immune system naturally, keep reading for some easy ways to give your body a big ol’ boost.
The saying ‘you are what you eat,’ certainly rings true when it comes to foods to support your immune system. Food contains nutrition (yay for that as we here at Nutra really like our food) and there are certain immunity boosting foods that contain nutrients that do a fabulous job in supporting your immune system. Here are some of our top picks to include in your diet of immunity boosting foods.
Vitamin C is one of the most commonly known vitamins for immunity. Vitamin C supports white blood cells which support the immune system, this is especially effective when taken in combination with zinc (hello there Collagen Beauty). Did you know Collagen Beauty contains 100% RDI of vitamin C? Pretty cool right!
Vitamin D, from wholefoods and also from sunshine, helps fight off infections as it supports a healthy immune system. Along with the classically known benefits for bones and muscles, vitamin D is a wonderful immunity support.
Zinc is found in every cell of the body and supports the proper functioning of immune cells, especially when taken with vitamin C, as mentioned above. Zinc deficiency may cause a weakened immune system and a lessened ability to fight off disease when it strikes.
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that supports a certain cell in our body called the T cells (should have been called vitamin T right?). T cells support a healthy immune system as well as playing an important role in fighting infected cells when the body is run down.
Vitamin A supports immunity in a couple of ways: It supports the development of important immune cells, including myeloid and lymphoid cells, and it supports epithelial cell growth (epithelial cells are the cells that line the body, creating a protective barrier. This includes skin, gut, blood vessels and more. A strong healthy barrier is your body’s first line of defence from pathogens).
Pre & probiotics are great for contributing to a happy gut, and with such a large portion of the immune system being found in the gut, this means a happy immune system too.
As much as immunity boosting foods will really bring the bolstering to support your immune system, you really do have to take a holistic approach. Here are other ways to boost your immune system naturally.
Exercise has many chain reactions that support whole body wellbeing, one of those benefits includes supporting the immune system. Exercise positively affects the antibodies in white blood cells which fight disease. Moderate exercise for 60 minutes or less of daily exercise is considered by professionals as optimum in positively affecting your immune system. Remember to always rest, especially when doing more strenuous exercise for longer periods of time, too much exercise with not enough rest can actually cause more harm.
Our Clean Active range and fitness supplements are designed to support you from every angle with premium pre and post workout supplements and protein powders to support your training and recovery.
Getting enough quality sleep is more than just looking and feeling fresh after those beauty sleep hours. Getting enough sleep is actually crucial for immunity support and wellbeing. Sleep deprivation can lead to a decrease of cytokines which are needed when fighting inflammation or dealing with excess stress. Consistent and quality sleep supports the immune system and makes you wake up on the right side of the immunity bed. Captain Calm is a great and delicious choice to aid in the unwinding and calming routine before bed time.
Excessive alcohol consumption can impair the body's ability to fight off disease, key word ‘excessive,’ so don’t stress, your glass of red wine here and there is totally a-okay! Excessive alcohol can wreak havoc for the body's organs when trying to fight disease, in particular in the gut as it can kill off healthy bacteria, and with 70% of the immune system living in the gut, cutting your consumption down is a great way to boost the immune system naturally.
Nutra Organics boasts a range of wholefood powders that contain key nutrients and foods to boost immunity as well as immunity boosters for kids. While many of our products contain fabulous immunity boosting foods, the below are our top four picks to really boost your immune system.
Our delicious broth powders and bone broth concentrates are especially great for immunity support over winter - but can be easily enjoyed in summer too. Bone broths have been famous for their immunity supporting powers for generations and for good reason. Bone broth provides essential amino acids and nutrients that are beneficial to gut health. The gut is where a healthy immune system begins, remember, it contains about 70% of immune cells.
Core body temperature plays an important role in immunity too. Studies have demonstrated that cold viruses are able to replicate more quickly when core body temperature drops below 37 degrees celsius, so that warming cup of broth is helping you in more ways than just providing immune supporting nutrients. So grandma was right: drink up that broth to boost your immune system naturally.
Our Super Greens + Reds is another immunity support super star. This product sometimes gets forgotten about when it comes to immunity powders, but Super Greens + Reds is such an amazing “all rounder”, making it so perfect for supporting immunity as well as an immunity booster for kids. Immunity is hugely complex and multifaceted, and it requires many systems working efficiently to work optimally as a whole. Super Greens + Reds contains pre and probiotics for gut health, immune supporting herbs, antioxidants to protect from free radical damage, and is a good source of multiple vitamins and minerals that support immunity. Super Greens + Reds is your most potent ally for immunity support and overall wellbeing.
Foods to boost immunity don’t have to be bland and beige - our delicious Acai Berry Blend is a wonderful immunity powder, made using premium refractance dried fruits that retain maximum nutrients. Refractance drying is a low temperature drying method that doesn’t disrupt the volatile nutrients (such as vitamins and antioxidant polyphenols) as the excess water is removed. This means that you are able to enjoy the benefits of these high antioxidant yielding fruits year round in a potent, delicious and super convenient form. Acai berry blend is particularly high in vitamin C which is essential for immunity support. Vitamin C supports the production of white blood cells, which help protect the body against pathogens.
When there is an infection present, the body’s requirements for vitamin C increases dramatically. Acai Berry Blend doesn’t only have to be used for making Acai bowls, it can mix into smoothies and be sprinkled on anything that takes your fancy (or just eaten straight off the spoon - we can confirm that that’s also a good time).
This one is for the kiddies, but nothing is stopping anyone else who fancies it from enjoying it and all of its immune boosting benefits too. Berry Immune is an immunity powder that was naturopathically formulated to gently support the immunity, providing essential nutrients, superfoods and herbs to help protect little people from big germs. Berry Immune also provides a source of vitamin D, which is an incredible immunity support essential for healthy immune system function, and much harder to get from the sun as daylight hours get shorter and we rug up with more clothes. Berry Immune is a yummy and nutrient dense superfood blend which mixes really well into yoghurt, porridge and baking, so it’s easy to sneak into your little one’s diet as an immunity booster for kids.
When it comes to supporting your immune system, immunity boosting foods and immune support vitamins, remember to take a holistic approach! Try incorporating one thing daily or weekly, even taking one small step in the right direction will take you towards a strong and healthy immune system.
]]>Stressed out? I think we can all admit that the year 2020 has been a tad stressful. Even if you don't personally feel too inconvenienced by COVID-19, the collective aura of uncertainty as we trench through a pandemic is enough to get our nervous system firing a little more than usual.
Luckily we are resilient beings and for the most part, as long as we get enough sleep, drink enough water and take a little time out for ourselves, we can bounce back brighter and better than ever quite quickly after going through a stressful patch. Where the problem lies is if this stressful patch becomes a stressful football field.
While the pandemic lives on and supporting our immune system over the long haul becomes more and more of a priority, it's growing increasingly important to understand the delicate dance between the stress we will inadvertently come in into contact with and how we can best support our health overall so our immune system stays working at its optimum.
Our stress response is primarily driven by our autonomic nervous system which is broken down into two main components - our Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). The SNS is responsible for keeping us alive when we encounter anything stressful - be it a lion or a bad egg salad sandwich, the SNS will do whatever it takes to get us through the situation by shutting down regular ongoing processes that aren't absolutely necessary to get us through that stressful period. In the instance of the lion, our heart rate will increase, our adrenals will stop producing regular sex hormones and prioritise producing Cortisol and Adrenaline, regular immune responses are temporarily switched off and blood will be prioritised away from our digestive system and to our extremities so we can quickly run away. Once the danger is clear, the 'rest and digest' component of our nervous system, the PNS, should activate to bring our heart rate back into check, slow our breathing, turn our immune system back on and move blood back to our other organs again to put us properly into chill mode. However then comes along a pandemic and you're constantly on edge...
This is where it gets interesting and where we can do our best work to make sure we come out the other side as well as we can. Aside from lions and potential food poisoning which are physical and chemical stresses, constant mental stress (ie. lockdowns with family we're only used to spending 2 hrs a day with!) also triggers our SNS to go into overdrive. Not always to the extreme on/off of the lion scenario, but think of it as a low yet constant stream of Cortisol keeping our ability to go into 'rest and digest' mode away. This has troublesome implications for our immune system that heavily relies on our PNS to tell it when and where to function. It's no coincidence that when we've been busy for a long time we get run down and pick up a bug, so now that you're aware there's plenty you can do to switch off the stress and switch on your immunity.
Here's the five best things you can do to reduce stress and support your immune system.
1. Self Care
Slowing down and taking time out for yourself away from the noise and distraction of obligations, and especially the internet, is the essential first step for reducing stress.
2. Nutrition
As we tend to burn through our nutritional resources when under stress it's also imperative that we supply our body with all the energy and nutrition it needs so we don't come out the otherside feeling more depleted than ever. Our Super Greens + Reds powder contains a targeted selection of vitamins and minerals and is a good one to keep on hand at all times just to top up or help to fill any nutritional gaps. Thriving Protein also contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals, protein, fats and fibres to keep you feeling full when energy demands are high. Adequate protein intake is also a necessity for immune function so don't shy away just because you may not be hitting the gym as hard as usual. And our Broth range is a go-to immune supporter with a source of Zinc and B Vitamins.
3. Sleep
Get your full eight hours of sleep at night as this is when our PNS works at its best to restore order after a hectic day.
4. Water
Drinking plenty of water will help ensure your lymphatic system (the roadway of the immune system) is well hydrated so immune cells can function appropriately.
5. Sunshine
And of course last but not least, getting at least 30 minutes of safe sun exposure for your daily dose of Vitamin D and mother nature will work wonders to help regulate your immune system and your sanity.
]]>Contrary to what the beauty industry often bangs on about, good skin isn’t confined to fancy pants face creams, ridiculous treatments (bird poo geisha facial, anyone?), or even botox. Sure, some good quality and toxin free topical products or treatments can definitely help, but glowing, healthy and clear skin truly begins from within.
Skin, being the largest organ of the body, can be an excellent reflection of overall health and vitality. Hair and nails can also be a great indicator of your nutritional status, because when the body becomes stressed for nutrients, things like hair and nails are often the first to be affected, as the body prioritises more “vital” organs and tissues to nourish. To be looking your best on the outside, you have to be taking care of yourself from the inside! Beauty is definitely much more than skin deep.
It is really hard coming up with a list of the foods that are best for beauty, because there are so many! But some foods definitely pack more of a punch than others, so here is a list of 17 of our favourites, and why including them in your diet can help you achieve your beauty goals. So here they are! (And if you’re in the mood for a bit of a word hunt – try to count the number of times we mention “antioxidant/s” and “Vitamin C”… it will be a few!)
Our Rainbow Breaky Bowl contains 7 of the ingredients on this list
1. Capsicum
Red peppers are amazing! They are really easy to work with and can liven up any dull looking meal. They are sweet and fibrous and contain 400% of your daily vitamin C requirements per 100g. Four. Hundred. Percent! Vitamin C should be one of the first things that come to mind when thinking about nutrition for beauty. It is your skin’s best friend as it is essential for tissue repair, collagen synthesis and can act as an antioxidant. Capsicum is high fibre, low energy, and also contains nutrients such as Vitamin A, Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, Potassium and Manganese – but it’s the epic levels of vitamin C that get capsicum it’s spot on this list.
2. Berries
So this is a whole group of foods, but there were too many amazing ones to put them on the list as individuals. Berries, in general, are super nutritionally dense, fibre filled, energy light, and full of polyphenol antioxidants. Some of our favourites include Acai, Goji, Raspberries, Strawberries and Blueberries. Berries are the perfect snack, as they provide slow releasing energy, taste amazing and a big handful won’t weigh you down. Berries are a particularly good source of vitamin C (strawberries win the vitamin C contest for berries by providing about 100% of your recommended daily intake per 100g). Goji berries are an amazing source of vitamin A, so amazing in fact, that you need to be really careful with how many you have – 1 tbsp of dried goji berries (28g) gives you about 300% of your RDI of vitamin A. Vitamin A assists with healthy skin production, acts as an antioxidant, is great for eye health and stimulates fibroblast activity (fibroblasts are the cells that build collagen fibres) – but too much vitamin A can cause toxicity.
Our C Berry Blast is an amazing, organic wholefood powder source of berries, and is an incredible source of both vitamin C and antioxidants! Although it's designed for kids tastebuds and to support their immunity, your skin will love you for it too.
3. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are another low energy, high nutrient food. They are a great source of vitamin C, biotin and vitamin K. Biotin (also known as vitamin b7) is really good for helping the growth of hair and nails, and vitamin K is needed for wound healing. Another amazing component of tomatoes is a phytochemical called lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant and is able to help protect the skin from UV rays and damage.
4. Carrots
The humble carrot doesn’t get enough attention these days! Carrots are a great source if vitamin A (in the form of beta carotene), vitamin K, potassium, biotin, vitamin B6, fibre and antioxidants. We already know about the magical effects of vitamin A on the skin, but vitamin A is also needed for eye health. One of the other antioxidant compounds of carrots is a chemical called lutein, which is thought to protect the eye from blue light waves (which, thanks to technology, we get way more exposure to than we should). So take care of those windows to your soul with carrots!
5. Bone Broth
Bone broth provides a tonne of nutrients. It provides a dietary source of Hyaluronic Acid, which is something our body produces itself (in relatively small quantities) but it’s great to be able to supplement the diet with a bit more. Hyaluronic Acid has this amazing ability to bind 1000x its own weight in water. It sits within deeper layers of the skin keeping the skin hydrated and looking plump (which is why it is often used as an injectable too!). Bone broth also contains some collagen… but collagen deserves its own spot on this list so more on that soon!
Our dehydrated Bone Broth powders are a fantastic place to start if you are new to broths! Rather than boiling bones for 24 hours and stinking out your house, simply add hot water to our broth powders for instant nourishment and all the same benefits.
6. Broccoli
Time to thank your mum for always including a side of broccoli with dinner – because this food is an amazing one to have as a regular on your plate! It’s highly nutritious, containing a large amount of vitamin C, folate (B9), vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, manganese and potassium. It’s high fibre and has quite a high protein content for a vegetable. Broccoli also contains a range of antioxidants, so is also anti-inflammatory. Broccoli’s most studied antioxidant is a chemical called sulphoraphane – which has a huge number of health benefits, but has also been shown to improve oxygenation of the skin, promote hair and nail growth and assist the body with its natural detoxification processes.
7. Oily Fish
Oily fish (particularly think salmon, sardines and mackerel) are amazing for skin because of their high omega-3 content, which is protective and anti-inflammatory for skin. They also contain many other beneficial nutrients such as potassium, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin E, and vitamin D. Oily fish help in the maintenance of our skin’s barrier function and keep skin calm and hydrated. A general rule for eating fish is to stick to smaller fish that are lower on the food chain. As you get higher up on the food chain, toxic heavy metals (particularly mercury) are present in higher concentrations, so are best avoided!
8. Red Wine
Red wine has to be included in this list because the French know beauty, and no one ever gets tired of hearing that a bit of wine is actually good for you (you’re welcome!). A moderate intake of red wine has been repeatedly shown to be associated with a range of health benefits compared to people who abstain completely. Red wine has high levels of a phytochemical called resveratrol (and other beneficial antioxidants such as catechin, epicatechin and proanthocyanidins) which are anti-inflammatory and help to protect the body from oxidative damage and slow the signs of aging. The words of warning that need to go with this “beauty food” is that there is a fine line between a healthy amount and an excessive amount – more is definitely not better! Another thing to look for is that some wine contains high levels of sulphites (used as a preservative) and sulphites are pro-inflammatory, often aggravating facial flushing, eczema, dermatitis and other skin conditions – so not such a great beauty food in those situations!
Our Flourish Bowl contains 8 ingredients mentioned in this blog!
9. Avocado
This delicious miracle of nature is another great food for skin! It’s high in monounsaturated fats (which are really healthy and great for skin barrier function), and avocados are also a source of the fat soluble vitamins E, K and A. Eat the avocado, put the avocado on your face… whatever you do with it, your skin will love it!
10. Vinegar and fermented foods/drinks
Vinegar, as well as lots of other fermented products (think kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha etc) are super healthy and are really beneficial for skin. They are able to help with a healthy gut microbiome (which affects EVERYTHING – your bodies detoxification process, they way we absorb and utilise nutrients, our immunity… just everything!). Acetic acid (which is formed from the fermentation process) is great for managing blood sugar levels and fighting infection making at an amazing ally for keeping skin clear and vibrant.
11. Seeds
Seeds are generally super nutritious! After all, they have to grow from a teeny tiny spec into a full-on plant which looks like a big job! Seeds tend to contain healthy fats (including our beloved omegas), and heaps of vitamins and minerals. Some of our favourites include Chia, Linseeds, Pepitas and Hemp. Hemp is extra special because it is one of the rare plant sources that are a complete protein that provides all of your essential amino acids. Protein is definitely important for any beauty routine – as fibres that make up the structure of our skin are protein based, and consuming adequate protein also helps to maintain and build more lean muscle.
12. Collagen
Collagen is an amazing food to supplement the diet with. Collagen fibres make up a huge part of the skin matrix and as we age, these fibres break down at a rate faster than we can repair/rebuild them. By including collagen in your diet, you are providing your body with exactly what it needs to build its own collagen – makes sense! Studies have demonstrated that supplementing a healthy diet with collagen can reduce wrinkles and improve hydration and elasticity, and our Collagen Beauty has been clinically proven to do all of this, plus support healthy hair and nails. So we think it’s an absolute hero for skin and can’t recommend it enough!
13. Spinach
Spinach is a great food for beauty for many reasons. Its rich in folate (essential for healthy cell growth), high in fibre (great for healthy bowels and waste elimination as well as keeping blood sugars stable), and high in iron! Iron is my main focus for this one because it’s essential for oxygen transport in the blood, and healthy oxygen transport in blood means oxygen being delivered to tissues such as skin, hair nails (and everything else, but these are our focus for today), and healthy growth and metabolism can occur. So a good iron intake is great for our beauty routines! Something important to note when we are dealing with plant sources of iron – it’s much less absorbable than the “haem-iron” that is found in meat. To get the most out of your plant sources of iron, combine it with lemon juice or something with a high citric acid content to turn the non-absorbable ferric iron (Fe3+) into the absorbable ferrous iron (Fe2+).
14. Brazil Nuts
Brazil nuts are your best bet for including natural selenium in your diet! Selenium is an essential trace mineral (so you need to include it in your diet, but just in small quantities). It’s particularly great for hair and nail growth, can act as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Selenium is also an essential component of selenoproteins – studies haven’t exactly confirmed what these proteins do in our bodies but deficiencies in selenium and/or problems with selenoproteins are associated with a variety of diseases. Taking selenium supplements can be a bit of a gamble, because although not enough selenium is a problem, too much can be toxic. So to find that sweet spot where selenium is present in high enough quantities to get hair and nails growing thick, strong and shiny without poisoning yourself, just eat a couple of brazil nuts each day. Too easy! Brazil nuts also contain magnesium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and a great dose of vitamin E, so they definitely deserve to be on this list!
15. Herbs & Spices
There are a number of amazing herbs and spices out there that don’t just serve to make our food taste better – but also provide powerful antioxidants, fight infection and are anti-inflammatory. Turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and garlic are a few of our all-time favourites. They are so easy to include in your meals, and they bring the flavour and health benefits of your dish to the next level!
16. Dark Chocolate
Cacao, and dark chocolate (as in over 70% cocoa – not the milky sugary stuff) is really nutritious and is great for your general health as well as great for glowing skin. Dark chocolate is a good source of iron, magnesium, copper and manganese, and also contain some Zinc, phosphorus and selenium but its main super power is the huge amount of antioxidants it contains. It’s full of polyphenols, flavanols and catechins (all different types of antioxidants) and studies have found that cocoa and dark chocolate are even more effective at neutralising free radicals than many super fruits and berries (including blueberries and acai). Cacao’s amazing antioxidant profile helps to protect your skin from the sun and prevent UV damage, as well as improving circulation, which encourages new skin growth, repair, hydration and gives your skin a healthy glow.
17. Nuts
So Brazil nuts have already had a special mention, but let’s not forget about the other nuts! In general, nuts are a great source of healthy fats, protein, vitamins and minerals which will help to sooth, protect and restore skin. They make convenient snacks so are such an easy way to boost your nutritional intake for the day. A few of our favourites are Almonds, Cashews, Pistachios and Walnuts. Our one word of caution however, is to watch the portion sizes when it comes to nuts. They are energy dense, so a little goes a long way. It’s really easy to overdo the energy intake if you have a whole bowl next to you to pick at all day.
In case you need another excuse to eat chocolate, this Nutty Choc Slice contains 5 ingredients mentioned!
A few not-so-beauty-friendly foods:
1. Spicy food
This is just a word of caution for people who react a bit to spicy food. Not everyone has to start giving up their curries, BUT if you are someone who has skin that flushes quite easily, spicy food can aggravate this and lead to broken capillaries and even rosacea over time. So just be careful!
2. Alcohol
Sorry team, we had to put this one on the naughty list. As we already know, alcohol dehydrates us and causes inflammation when consumed in excessive amounts (and unfortunately, anything more than 2 glasses of wine is “excessive” when it comes to health). If consumed regularly, the dehydration and inflammation can lead to accelerated aging, broken capillaries and dull lacklustre skin. Another fact about alcohol is that, because it’s a vasodilator (keeps blood vessels open) and a blood thinner, even little bumps can cause bruising!
3. Sulphites
Sulphites are added into LOTS of food as a preservative including processed foods, cured meats, wines, dried fruits, and many more so read labels carefully! They can cause lots of different reactions, like aggravating asthma, autoimmune issues, rashes and occasionally full scale allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.
4. High sugar
A diet high in refined sugar causes blood sugars to spike, which can lead to inflammation and lots of skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and premature aging.
5. Trans Fats
Trans fats aren’t found in nature, they are a result of overheating unsaturated fats, or food companies deliberately putting unsaturated fats through a process called “hydrogenation” which is used to make unsaturated fats become solid and/or stop them from going rancid. This unnatural form of fat causes inflammation in the body and is associated with lots of negative health effects.
6. High Soy
Not everyone needs to avoid soy – but it’s on this list for those that it does apply to. Soy contains phytoestrogens, which in some people can cause hormonal disruptions and lead to breakouts. If you find you are someone who suffers from hormonal breakouts, and who likes soy products, it could be worth your while to remove soy from your diet temporarily and see if it helps.
7. Dairy
Again, not everyone needs to swear off dairy, but if you’re suffering from acne, skin flushing, rosacea or general inflammation, dairy might be a contributing factor! Dairy can be pro-inflammatory and cause an increase in mucus production.
And there you have it! As you can see, there are so many different nutrients that are needed in your diet to support beautiful skin, hair and nails. As always, a balanced diet high in a wide variety of colourful, natural, organic foods is always best, and we hope this list will help inspire you to include more healthy foods in your diet!
